Hello friends!

We are very excited to announce that the Tipitina's Music Office Co-Op is now open in Lafayette!

The Co-Op is available to musicians and digital media artists for ONLY (really--ONLY) $10/month. Members have access to Windows PCs with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite, Macintosh computers with Pro Tools, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Garageband and Reason, high-speed Internet, plus phones, fax, scanners, printers, and other office equipment. In addition the Co-Op provides an array of educational and training resources, access to pro bono legal services, and referrals to a host of other services, programs and opportunities.

We are open M-F 12-8p and located at 125 S. Buchanan St. Suite C. in downtown Lafayette - that is between W. Simcoe and Second St.

Wed, March 31, 5:30 - Final Cut Pro 202 with David Webber
Final Cut Pro is the industry standard software for editing video. Learn methods to create great projects in simple ways that make sense in FCP. David Webber follows up his FCP 101 with this class, going over his secrets & techniques for editing in Final Cut Pro. He’s even going to assign (optional) homework where you can come in and edit with some stock footage and send him your final project! Boy, this guy is good. 5:30pm @ the Co-Op.

This year, April showers are bringing back the Tipitina’s/Valcour Song Contest!
During the month of April, Co-Op members have THREE hours to record a song and submit it to Rachel, who in turn will turn all of the songs into Lucius, Joel & Phillip over at Valcour records. They will then select ONE song (it’s hard!) to receive $200 cash, a year membership to the Co-Op, and Artist of the Month over at Valcourrecords.com!!!! WHAT?! I know. Wed, April 7, 5:30p How to record an awesome song in Pro Tools by Chase Dugas
Chase Dugas has been in the audio business for 12 yrs doing everything from running sound for live bands (Third Eye Blind, Josh Kelley, Dave Mathews, and Spank the Monkey, just to name a few) to building and repairing audio gear. With the song contest on everyone’s mind, Chase will be here next week to teach us how to record a killer song in pro tools with only 3 hours at the helm! It will be a fast based class going over the basics of using Pro Tools, what kind of mic’s to use, frequencies, and lots else. Come with questions and maybe even with some coffee in your belly!

Tipitina's/Valcour Records Song Contest!!

We are excited about the second Tipitina's/Valcour Records Song Contest that will take place during the month of April 2010!!

The way it works is that Co-Op members have three hours to come in and record one song. It can be a band, your solo project, you can have your own engineer that you bring in or do it all yourself. Rap, indie, folk, whatever you make we want you to record it!
Then the men over at Valcour will listen to all the entries and pick ONE recording (talk about a hard job!) to win $200, artist of the month on ValcourRecords.com, and a year membership to the Co-Op!!

And don't think you need a lot of bells and whistles to win. Just make a quality recording of your best song. You can read about last year's winner, Christine Peirce, here! She did the whole thing by herself in one sitting, it's awesome and we can't wait to hear what else is out there!!

Here's the rules & guidelines:

All entries must be recorded at the Tipitina’s Music Office Co-Op (at 510 Johnston Street) in Lafayette during the month of April 2010.

Participating artists and bands must consider their home base to be within the 22 parishes of Acadiana (and must provide a mailing address in Acadiana).*

All entries must consist of original material.

Only one entry per Artist or band (if two different bands share one member, that is fine, but different bands cannot contain two or more of the same members).

All entries must be recorded and mixed from start to finish during a single three hour recording session (it is fine to use songs previously written and worked on, but all recording music take place during the three hour session).

Song entries must be between two and four minutes in duration.

Entries will be judged by the partners at Valcour Records, LLC; criteria will include, but are not limited to: songwriting, instrumentation, vocals, creativity, performance quality, production quality, and likability.

Checks will be made out to a single recipient indicated at the time of entry, and any distribution among participants thereafter will be solely the responsibility of the artist.

Participants under 18 years of age must provide the name of a parent or legal guardian to accept financial winnings on their behalf.

All genres of music are welcome and variety is encouraged.

Contest rules are subject to change without notification.

First off, thank you to those members who helped put on the fundraisers we had a couple weeks ago. We were able to raise some money for our Co-Op and also let more people know about who we are and what we do! But a very special and loud thanks to those of you who came out and donated to help us continue the work we do.

YES! THAT’S RIGHT!
We now have a brand spanking new 27” imac with the latest Pro Tools LE & Final Cut Pro Suite 3!! I AM SO EXCITED! Just give me a day to do some rearranging before you all start running in. Thanks to the Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation for providing us with a grant to get the new equipment.

Valcour/Tip’s song contest returns!
That’s right! Valcour Records and the Tipitina’s Music Office Co-Op are teaming up again with the Song Contest! For the month of April, come into the Co-Op and do the best recording you can in only 3 hours! At the end of the month, I’ll send them all off to the guys over in Eunice & they’ll pick their favorite (it’s hard to do!) and the winner will receive a spotlight as Artist of the Month on the Valcour Records website, $200 cash, and a year membership to the Co-Op! Details are forthcoming, but if you just can’t wait contact me and I’ll fill you in.

Thurs, March 18th, 5:30 – Gwen Richard presents: Grants
Grants are one of the keys to making money as an artist, but it can be hard to wrap your finger around which ones are right for you and just how to write them. Gwen works with the grants over at the Acadiana Center for the Arts and will be giving a presentation to help you know about grants that are available and the best way to get them.

Wed, March 31st 5:30 – Final Cut Pro 202 with David Webber
Final Cut Pro is the industry standard for editing video. David taught FCP 101 recently, and for those of you who already know how to start your own project but need a boost in your ways of editing, etc, in FCP 202 we will learn ways of creating great projects in simple ways that make sense. There may even be pre-class homework, but I’ll let you know before hand if so. The way David Webber teaches, you feel like he could teach you to sit on the beach in cool, dark sunglasses drinking your favorite beverage out of a coconut. He’s that good at empowering you.

March Survey: Mandatory!

Dear Co-Op Member:

As in the past, your Music Office Co-Op will be conducting an Economic Impact Study during the month of March 2010.

This Economic Impact Study is your Co-Op's most effective marketing and fundraising tool. Because of the Study your Co-Op has been able to grow into a statewide network of offices, and secure State funding. To see the most recent Study, follow this link:

Your Music Office Co-Op is a workforce development program, so the Study asks some very specific, and personal, questions about earnings and revenue sources. We collect this information in a private, closed-door interview that takes five minutes or less. For accuracy, and your ease of use, the Co-Op manager will explain the questions and enter your answers directly into an online database; no paper copies are created. Co-Op managers are under strict non-disclosure orders; they may not reveal any part of your information to anyone, including me. The survey is designed so there is no way to identify you; no names, no addresses, and no other identifying information is collected.

Unlike previous years, participation in the study is now mandatory for Co-Op membership. If you use the Co-Op in March, you must participate in the survey. It's that important.

Please be prepared to answer the following questions as accurately as possible:
- What was your total annual income, from all sources, during 2009 and 2008?
- What was your income from music/media activities during 2009 and 2008?
- How many gigs did you do during 2009 and 2008?
- What were your average earnings per gig?
- What are the sources, and rough percentages, of your music/media income streams (gigs, teaching, CD sales, tech work, etc.)?

To ensure accuracy, please look over - or bring along - your last two federal income tax returns, your calendar or schedule for '08 and '09, Quicken/QuickBooks, ledger, bank statements, or other applicable music/media business financial records. If such materials are unavailable, please try to recollect and reconstruct as accurately as possible. We ask that you be ready to do the survey upon your first Co-Op usage in the month of March.

Wed, Feb 3rd 5:30 Managing and Booking Bands with Johnny Palazzotto and Lisa Stafford
I’m not going to candy coat this: it’s hard work to book shows and it’s hard work to manage a band. But you can do it! Whether it be your own career or someone else’s, Lisa and Johnny have countless years under their belts working in the music industry and will spend the time to pass their knowledge on to you. Lisa Stafford has worked at Festival International booking the bands for as long as I can remember and manages all sorts of bands from Cedric Watson to Feufollet. Johnny Palazzotto is a forty year veteran of the regional, national and international entertainment industry, has been instrumental in making the rest of the world aware of numerous Louisiana artists, and is making the trek from Baton Rouge just to co-present this workshop!

David Webber is a teacher among teachers, and will join us this night to go over the basics of using Final Cut Pro. If you are interested in video editing and want to learn how to go more pro, or if you’re already pro looking for a refresher, join David’s journey into the wide ocean that is Final Cut Pro.

Thurs, Feb 25th 5:30 Inside Tube Amps with Joel Savoy
Beginner tube amp safety, repair and modification. We'll talk about how to safely work on your own amp and the basic principles of tube audio circuits, including reading schematics. Joel will discuss some common problems and general troubleshooting techniques as well.
Joel is a musician among musicians and turns out he’s an amp-builder among amp-builders, too. If anyone would be interested in a 3-class course on building your own 10W Class A tube amp, please email Joel Savoy at joel@valcourrecords.com. Price is $350 per person, all parts (except speaker and cabinet) supplied. Some tools required.

We will be Café Des Amis’ non-profit of choice during their next Art Opening by the sisters Norma Thompson & Gerta Kilchrist! Spend your evening with their irresistible food and the sweet sounds of Bonsoir Catin, and leave some money behind to support what we are doing here at the Co-Op! Jillian’s posters cover our walls here, and you can see her fingerprints on the merch of everything she’s involved with, from Blackpot Festival’s oodles of items to band merch for her own projects. Jillian’s aesthetic and creative visions go way beyond craft, or art, or marketing.

Cynthia Simien teaches Women In Music

Time Magazine and Maria Shriver recently conducted an extensive study about the State of the American Woman and determined that for the first time in our history women make up the majority of the work force in this country. Learn about the opportunities the music industry holds for women, why women are generally good in business and how we are unique in our approach that makes us an asset to the music industry.

Cynthia Simien’s accomplishments are impressive to say the least, but here’s a go at at: An agent, manager, booker, event promoter and publicist for music events and artists, Cynthia has established several music businesses. She has been on Grammy boards since 04 and in April
2007 was elected National Trustee by The Recording Academy (Grammys) and reelected in 2009 for a second consecutive term. She is the first from Louisiana to hold this position and the first female Trustee elected by our Memphis Chapter since it was established 35 years ago. Cynthia is one of 11 women out of a total of 41 National Recording Academy Trustees
and was instrumental in creating the Cajun/Zydeco Grammy category. In
2007 she was appointed by Governor Kathleen Blanco to be on the newly formed Louisiana Music Commission and reappointed again by Governor Jindal.

David Webber teaches Circuit Bending 101: The Art of the Creative Short Circuit

This circuit bending presentation will consist of a lecture and then a live circuit bending demonstration. No prior knowledge or experience necessary. If you are interested in this, I really think you should come. Here’s the wikipedia entry for those really curious, but the idea is that you alter the circuits of electronic devices, like a kid’s toy, to create new, interesting sounds. It’s pretty nerdy and experimental, but reallllly cool. Check out David’s art, too. Also, David says that if it goes well enough he wants to do a follow up class of just hands on circuit bending. So show him you care!

David Webber is an Assistant Professor of Media Art at University of Louisiana at Lafayette and is builder of electronic musical instruments.

Friends, musicians, artists, parents, wives, sons….

Today marks one year that the Tipitina’s Music Office Co-Op has been open in Lafayette, and I would like to say a personal THANK YOU to all of you who have made it a really amazing year. We have exceeded all expectations, and with over 200 members, your gracious donations, unspeakably giving volunteers, and the general community spirit of our community, it is no wonder.

With that, of course, I have to say that we need your continued support to keep providing these much needed resources. Please consider choosing us when thinking about who to give your tax deductible (501c3) donations to this holiday season whether it be as a gift to your family or in the name of your love for local arts & music. If you would like to give us physical gifts, please contact me and I can rattle off a whole slew of things that would enhance the Co-Op, from headphone splitters to sound proofing materials to mac computers.

On Tuesday, Nov 17^th, 5:30-7 ALLISON BOHL is doing her in-demand “Lighting for Film with what you can buy at your local hardware store”

So many of you missed it and pleaded for an encore, I forgot to film it, everyone who went loved it, so what the heck, it’s here again! Come out and listen to Allison’s thoughts and ideas and realities and experiences about lighting on a low budget. I won’t give away her secrets now, but it’s a cool class to take, and can apply to photography as well. For those who haven't seen her Reel yet, check it out below!

Last week Herman Fuselier (The Times, The Advertiser, OffBeat) and Dege Legg (the Independent) led a workshop on how to get press. Herman wrote an article about it that was in the Advertiser on Friday. His tips are below ("read more"), but you can see the whole article here.

What makes your music unique? Why should anyone listen? Sell your music to the writer or editor, but be realistic and be brief. You think your band's first CD is funkier than anything ever put out by James Brown. But it's probably not.
Be original, which is a hard sell to a public stuck on Brown Eyed Girl and The Back Door. But no artist became a legend by playing other people's songs.

Is your music really ready for prime time? Technology allows anyone to record a CD in a back bedroom. But it shouldn't look and sound like it was produced in your bedroom. I've received many CDs with distorted sound, misspelled words and blurry pictures. Your presentation says how serious you are about your craft.

Have some patience. With so many bands, so many CDs and so little space to publish it all, it may take weeks or months to publicize your music. Frankly, some music may not get in at all.

Get listed in the entertainment calendar or music listings. It only takes a phone call or e-mail to get your band's gig listed in the calendar. It's free, yet it's amazing how many bands don't participate or wait for someone else to do it for them.
Thousands of readers plan their weekends around these listings. But they can't go to your gigs if they don't know about them. Band listings are one of the easiest, quickest ways to get publicity. Did I mention they're free?

Join the online social networks. As much as it hurts me as a print guy to suggest another medium, I must say you might as well not have a band and music event if you don't have a presence on MySpace or Facebook.
Facebook has 200 million users. An estimated 100 million check their accounts at least once a day. Thousands of them live here and could be hearing your music. They're not if you're not online.

Do your best and never stop. Your break will take months, perhaps years. You'll give away more CDs than you sell. But when you give your all and refuse to quit, people will talk about you. You'll get good gigs. You'll get more press coverage than you ever imagined. Just never give up.

Tom Brown is going to help us all learn to customize our own shirts, bags, coozies, shoes LP covers... you name it. His Silk-Screening workshop is the first of a new series on how to make your own merch. We will learn what the basics are to make your own screens and print up large quantities of the image of your dreams. It's recommended you wear appropriate clothes as inks and chemicals may be around. Tom's been in this business for years and started out with his own little DIY operation. His shop, Downtown T-Shirts, is just 2 blocks away from the Co-Op at Lee and Vermilion.

Hold the phone--Storyboarding taught by visual artist Kody Chamberlain--really? From Scorsese to Disney, storyboarding has earned a reputation as being a vital part of the filmmaking process. But what if you can't draw and your budget doesn't have room for an artist? Kody will reveal a variety of NO-COST techniques to supercharge your creativity and productivity with storyboarding. Little to no drawing skills required!
His bio is too long to list here, but, with all respect to Kody, here's the Proper Nouns to give you an idea of his scope and talent: Paramount, Landscape, Universal Pictures, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Image Comics, Harper Collins, BOOM! Studios, IDW Publishing, TOPPS' Indiana Jones Heritage Series, 'MySpace Artist of the Month', MacWorld, and--yes--country singer Trace Adkins. Kody is a man about Lafayette and whose studio, again, is mere blocks from the Co-Op.

Wayne taught the electric guitar repair class last month, three people brought guitars, some unplayable, and left with total jammers. It was really awesome! So if you have an acoustic that needs some TLC from a pro, bring it in next week and have Wayne teach us all what to do to make it sound the best it can. If we have time, he will be your guitar’s Registered Nurse for the night, too.

Missy teaches at the ULL music dept and decided it’s just not enough, so she’s gonna do something here, too! Missy will bring in a PA and mixer from Show & Tell Productions and show us how to set it up, use it, and if we are lucky how to wrap up cables. If you are interested in putting on your own shows, touring, or just want an intro into live sound, this is for you.

We all love Allison’s classes here at the Co-Op, and are excited for her encore lighting for film class. The last one focused on what you could do with expensive equipment you can rent, but this time Allison will talk about things you can buy down the street on an affordable budget to make professional lighting.

Wed, 30th 6-7pm Brian Richard will talk about Digital Photography (bring your camera!)
Brian is a man who wears many artistic hats, but his specialty by schooling is in photography. Just back from doing film work in Australia, Brian is going to talk about how to take the best photos with digital cameras. Feel free to bring yours in so he can specify what he talks about to the needs of those attending.

Want to learn Photoshop? Just a reminder we have a man who wants to help you learn! Local photographer Jason Cohen is available for one on one lessons with anyone interested in perfecting their image editing skills. Give me a buzz if you wanna make an appointment with him!

Because of the contest, I wanted to keep our class schedule to a minimum this month so the Pro Tools room would be open. More coming in August, including webdesign!

Thursday the 23rd Conni Castille will do a class on Pre Production from 6-7pm. Conni has a really long list of credits and currently works with the Cinematic Arts Workshop doing Pre Production work. If you are at all interested in film work come to this class!

Soundtrack Pro is part of the Final Cut Studio suite and is excellent software for doing post-production sound work for your film. Wednesday June 17th 5:30-7pm Branding 102: Creating Cohesive Promotional Material with Michael Russo. Michael’s Branding 101 class was so helpful we asked him to please come back and talk some more about marketing and branding. This workshop will cover how to create your promotional material (including press kits) and how to create an identifiable look for these materials.

Thursday June 18th 6-7pm Basic Interview Technique for Camera & Lighting with Allison Bohl. Cinematographer Allison Bohl will go over techniques for filming an interview. Allison has some great documentary work so those of you interested in film should certainly come learn her ways.

Valcour Records Contest!
Local label Valcour Records has offered to do a really awesome contest with Co-Op members for the month of July!
How it works is you come in (make an apt!) and have three hours to record something (Rachel will time you!) and then submit the final product to Rachel. At the end of the month, Rachel will turn them all in to the Valcour team and they will pick their favorite. Whoever wins will get a feature on their website as Artist of the Month, $200, and who knows what else they may throw in! So start thinking now!

Featured at this presentation will be information on how to protect your work: What is a copyright? What is a trademark? What is the difference? and Why do these and other intellectual property issues matter to me? The presentation will be given by entertainment lawyer Ashlye Keaton, along with Reid Wick of the Grammy Foundation.

This workshop is intended to be one of a series of practical workshops for ALL artists, including musicians, film makers, visual artists, craftsmen, writers, etc., providing basic information you need to know about the critical business side of your endeavors.

The workshop will open with a reception at which food and drinks will be provided, along with a short music performance.

This workshop is through the Acadiana Center for the Arts, located at 101 W. Vermillion St. in Lafayette, La.

Calvin Johnson, Fred Thomas,& Brett Lyman will join the Tip's Co-Op for a panel discussion on Releasing your Own Records. Wanna put out your own cassettes/7"'s/CDs/DVDs/mp3s/etc? They've done it all, and have years behind them of experience. Find out how to make them, get them to people, and most importantly to have people tell you YES YOU CAN DO IT! IT'S EASY!

Calvin Johnson started K Records in '82 by putting out his friend's music on cassettes. He has been in numerous bands and toured internationally, and managed to run his label for over 25 years now, a pretty impressive task.

Fred Thomas has been on numerous labels (Polyvinyl, K, & more) and in numerous bands (Saturday Looks Good To Me, City Center, Fred Thomas, & more) and puts out his own records in different formats alllll the time. He's also worked at a ton of record stores including Jackpot in Portland, OR and Other Music in NYC.

Brett Lyman has ALSO been in many bands (Measles, Mumps, Rubella; more!) on many labels, and currently has his own label up in Michigan called M'Lady's Records.

Jason Cohen, a really great local photographer, will come in to teach the basics of Photoshop. Learn what the basic tools are and how to use them to create images that are all your own.

We are going to try out a lab-style class for this event, so please RSVP to lafayette at tipitinas dot com. You are welcome to bring your own computer if you have Photoshop, but please let me know in your RSVP if you plan to do so.

Learn about publishing and copyrighting your own music with Roger Kash. He will go through registering a song on BMI and Harry Fox, and discuss and answer questions about owning the rights to your songs.

Roger has held the position of Director of A&R (Artists and Repertoire) for a large independent label for the past 14 years. Currently he spends his mornings researching label copy (writers, publishers, publishing splits etc.) for the label's vast catalog of works in addition to registering their published works, and applying for mechanical licenses for works that they don't own the publishing for.
Roger is also a song writer and musician (a killer mandolin player!)

Hey Co-Opers, AOC is making a really cool community connection with musicians that I hope you all take advantage of. Support your community so it can support you back, and get promo while you are at it! Contact me if you'd like more info, or stop by AOC down the street from the Co-Op at 124 E Main.

After putting your blood, sweat, and tears into your music, where do you go next? AOC would like to help out by playing your music during our new message board. The message board is a graphics based slide show promoting non-profit organizations and community events. It airs at various times during the day on LUS channels 3 and 4 in Lafayette and Cox channels 15 and 16 in Lafayette and the five surrounding parishes.

Songs need to be submitted in mp3 format. They should be radio versions and no longer than five minutes in length. Artist will be required to sign paperwork stating that they are liable for their submissions.

Allison Bohl’s final Beginners Final Cut Pro class is tonight, Thursday March 12. She is going to go over capturing from mini dv tape to computer, editing it, and burning to DVD. The class goes from 6-7 and will begin and end PROMPTLY today. So get here before 6!

Well, we had our first workshop on Tuesday--Pro Tools with Tony Daigle who was SOOO helpful and amazing. Those who missed it, we went over the basics of setting up, what tools are where, and my favorite: keyboard shortcuts! Next week Tony will bring in some of his projects to demonstrate some of the power of Pro Tools.
That's this upcoming Tuesday, Feb the 10^th from 6-7.

New on the schedule is a three part series on beginning Final Cut led by member Allison Bohl! She has lots of amazing projects under her belt, and we are excited that she has offered her time and knowledge to the rest of us.

It's time for our first workshops!!

Come to the Co-Op on Tuesday Feb 3^rd and 10^th from 6-7pm for a beginning Pro Tools workshop led by the amazing (and Grammy winning!) Tony Daigle.

The workshops will build on each other, so plan to come to both if you can.
Those who have never recorded are welcome to come and observe the basics of Pro Tools, and those who are old hats to recording but have never used the platform are encouraged to come to build their knowledge.

And coolest of cool: we finally got our drumkit in!! A huge thanks to Scott's Drums in Lafayette who donated the kit to us, and who is working to get us cymbals as I type. Remember, the drums are only for recording use as we have neighbors (and other members) whose ears we want to respect.

The Co-Op is available to musicians and digital media artists for ONLY (really--ONLY) $10/month. Members have access to Windows PCs with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite, Macintosh computers with Pro Tools, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Garageband and Reason, high-speed Internet, plus phones, fax, scanners, printers, and other office equipment. In addition the Co-Op provides an array of educational and training resources, access to pro bono legal services, and referrals to a host of other services, programs and opportunities.

We are open M-F 11a-7p and located at 510 Johnston St. in downtown Lafayette - that is between Jackson and Vermillion on Johnston St. Parking is in front of the At&t store on the corner of Jackson and Johnston, and we are around the corner from their store.
